Located at the heart of The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill campus is a historic and vibrant landmark, Kenan Stadium. It has served the University community for more than 80 years. Since its construction in 1927, the stadium has modified several times to meet the changing needs to the University. For its most recent transformation, the stadium was expanded and renovated to keep Kenan a modern facility, adopt the atmosphere of the campus and enhance the fan experience.
Heery Sports was retained by the UNC to prepare a phased master plan to expand Kenan Stadium to 70,000+ seats. In addition to the seating expansion, the plan includes 75 new private suites, 3,000 club seats and an end zone bunker club just above field level. The plan also calls for new toilets and concessions for the upper and lower sideline grandstands. New press facilities and stadium entries are also incorporated into the design along with a new business office and Ram’s Club with all the standard support facilities for a stadium of this size.
Heery continued design services with Phase I schematic design to include 50 suites, 1,000 club seats, ADA seating, a 30,000 SF academic center for student athletes, new concourses, stadium support, an 8,000 SF lacrosse locker room and a 20,000 SF Olympic sport strength and conditioning center. There is also the potential to lower the playing field to improve site lines on the first seven rows of the stadium. Heery also provided full interior design services along with sports consulting services for the East End Zone expansion completed in 2011. The new five story, 170,000 SF facility included a concourse club for 2,000 patrons with exterior seating and loge boxes, an upper level club for 840 patrons with exterior seating and loge boxes along with a suite level containing 20 suites with exterior seating and two lounge areas.
