Veterans Administration - Tampa - James A. Haley Spinal Cord Extended Care Addition

Tampa, Florida

To meet the special needs of returning veterans who have serious spinal cord injuries and may be paraplegic or quadriplegic, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) upgraded its facilities at the James A. Haley Veteran Hospital in Tampa, Florida.  The 30-bed, 22,000 SF Spinal Cord Injury Extended Care addition was developed specifically for extended care and rehabilitation of those suffering these types of injuries. The VA selected Heery International in a joint venture with Angel Mendez Environmental Services, Inc. (AMES) to provide design build services for the project.

Among the special features of Heery’s design for this facility are the automated lift systems in each room that help patients move directly from bed to other areas of the room, the shower and the bathroom. The lift system helps both patients and staff, by allowing patients more dignity and making it possible for staff to move patients more easily than using stretchers, wheelchairs or personal physical support within the patient room.

The assignment also includes renovation/alteration to approximately 2,600 SF of the existing Spinal Cord Injury Center.
