University of Texas at Austin Darryl K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium
Austin, Texas
Originally constructed in 1924, the Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium and Joe Jamail Field at the The University of Texas in Austin is part of the rich heritage and winning tradition of Longhorn football. When the university decided to expand the stadium and enhance its amenities, a Heery-developed master plan showed them the way. The 10-phase master plan charted a logical path for future growth, creating a scale that related better to the campus and delivering amenities for players and fans alike. Since then, Heery has implemented all parts of the master plan to the delight of players and fans alike.
The phases included:
1. Replaced Astroturf with Natural Field
2. Added 14 Suites
3. Renovated and Expanded West Grandstand
4. Developed Practice Fields
5. Renovated Football Team Facilities Building
6. Renovated and Expanded East Grandstand and Added 52 Suites
7. Built New Track/Removed Track From Stadium and Lowered Field
8. Replacing North End Zone with Grandstands Closer to Field—currently in design
9. Enclose South End Zone with Lower Level Skyboxes, Clubs and Upper Level Seating
10. Add Full-Size Indoor Practice Field to Team Facilities Building
The projects had to be carried out in the eight months between football seasons. The final product—a stadium that presents a decided home team advantage. The noise of the fans is concentrated on the field, the players can feel the enthusiasm, the fans are as close to the action as they can get, the amenities and the suites are top of the line, with Longhorn accents throughout. And, Heery did it within the budgets and time frames allowed.
