University of Maryland - Byrd Stadium Tyser Tower - Renovation & Expansion
College Park, Maryland
Due to increased spectator demand and revenue opportunities, the University of Maryland is enlarged Byrd Stadium by adding 64 luxury suites featuring indoor and outdoor seating, 500 mezzanine-level seats featuring heated and covered seating, new presidential suite with seating for 200, new work areas for television, radio and print media, new work areas for coaches and game-day operations staff, new team store, enhanced seating for disabled customers, and installation of a new state-of-the-art video board above the west end zone. The university also expanded the Gossett Team House with improved training areas and locker facilities. Heery’s extensive experience designing and building sports facilities appealed to Maryland officials, who wanted to complete this project in phases – and needed a creative solution to reinforcing the existing structure before proceeding.
The first phase of the project is the expansion of Tyser Tower along the south sideline and the addition of 500 mezzanine-level seats with heated and covered chair seating. This work also includes new press facilities and 64 new luxury suites with flat-screen televisions, food services and indoor and outdoor seating. The cost for Phase 1 is $50.8 million.
The second phase of the will include new restrooms and concessions, and larger projects such as lowering the playing field. This will dramatically improve sight lines along the near sideline for 3,000 fans in the first 10 rows of existing seating.
Future plans include the expansion of Gossett Team House to include improved training areas and locker facilities, as well as the addition of nearly 8,000 seats in the west end zone to reach the targeted stadium capacity.
