University of Maryland, Baltimore - Health Sciences Facility and Library
Baltimore, Maryland
Founded in 1807, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is the oldest of the 11 collegiate institutions in the statewide University of Maryland System and serves as the State of Maryland’s principal human services professional education and medical center. Heery International provided project management and owners representative services for two new facilities on the UMB campus.
The new 190,000 SF health sciences and human services library, which serves as the headquarters for the Southeastern Atlantic Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, was the first of its kind in the nation consisting of five levels above grade and one level below grade. The new facility more than doubled the amount of space in the universitys previous library.
The six-story, 183,000 SF health sciences facility II (HSF II) is the largest building on the campus devoted solely to biomedical research and provided a substantial increase in campus laboratory space. The facility is used primarily by researchers for the schools of medicine and pharmacy, and contains millions of dollars worth of state-of-the-art lab equipment.
Heery encountered unique challenges in constructing these facilities. For instance, HSF II is located next door to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where emergency helicopters take off and land on the roof. The life and death mission of these helicopters required close communication with the construction crews on site so that the cranes could be moved out of the flight path in a timely manner.
