The Citadel - Johnson Hagood Stadium - Renovation & Expansion

Charleston, South Carolina

The Citadel, the military college of South Carolina located in Charleston, retained Heery to provide architectural and engineering services for the first three phases of the overall replacement of the existing stadium.   Opened in 1948, Johnson Hagood Stadium is home to the Citadel Bulldogs’ football and soccer teams.  Situated on the historic Ashley River, the facility is the largest in the Southern Conference and seats 21,000 fans.

Phase I was the 20,000 SF Altman Center in the south end zone.  It is a two-story structure with locker facilities for home and visiting football and women’s soccer teams at the lower level and an upper level dedicated to functions sponsored by the Brigadier Foundation, the college’s athletic fund-raising organization. The upper level features a hospitality room, bar, food service facility, washrooms and a viewing balcony overlooking the entire football field. Located at the south end zone, the Altman building is also part of the redefinition of the southern entrance to the Citadel campus.

The second phase was replacement of the west grandstand with 10,000 new chair and bench seats.  New concourses, toilets, concessions and temporary press and gates were also included.

The third phase, completed in the fall of 2008, added a west tower structure behind and above the new west grandstand.  This six-level structure includes press, suites, club and terrace level with field views from the top three levels.  The first level is additional concourse, concessions, kitchen and S.C. National Guard equipment storage.  The concourse can be enclosed with roll-down doors to provide a year-round National Guard assembly space, Air Guard locker rooms and offices.   This facility serves as an emergency readiness center for Charleston.
