Richmond Federal Courthouse
Richmond, Virginia
Heery has provided architectural and engineering services for the new Richmond Federal Courthouse, which includes five district courtrooms, two magistrate courtrooms, two bankruptcy courtrooms and additional space for court-support agencies. The new courthouse is designed to meet the 10-year space requirements for the proposed building tenants and to anticipate the space requirements of the 30-year projections. Contemporary court security provisions and efficient, dignified operations for the courts and the public were required as part of the design. This 336,000 SF federal court building located on a tight site has achieved LEED Silver certification.
The courthouse has two major components: a 100-foot high north-facing atrium and a seven-story courthouse and office facility to the south. The building contains 20 detention cells and 10 prisoner interview rooms. The design provides a state-of-the-art facility with an emphasis on incorporation of latest technologies and flexibility for adaptability to future technological advances.
