Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center

Burbank, California

After Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center (PSJMC) was damaged by the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, Heery was hired to provide advice and counsel regarding FEMA procedures and to verify the budget for the already established facilities master plan. Through review and analysis of the conceptual design and master plan, Heery determined that, as originally planned, Providence’s project costs would exceed the available budget by $100 million. To bring the project back within budget, Heery spearheaded reprogramming efforts to redefine a successful facility strategy collaborating with PSJMC leadership and the architects. Critical to the smooth implementation of this project was Heery’s detailed management of all the consultants, the coordination of all their efforts and the overall project costs. This multi-phased project included construction of a new, 150-bed inpatient tower and support environment, as well as a kitchen and cafeteria,, and the build-out of two additional nursing units. Heery also managed the renovation of the existing emergency department and conference center, and the conversion of an inpatient facility to outpatient services. The 200,000 SF, structurally unstable West Building, which contained beds, surgical facilities and utility connections to many other structures, was demolished.
