Medical College of Georgia Health System - Outpatient Cancer Center

Augusta, Georgia

A recognized leader in family and patient-centered care, Medical College of Georgia (MCG) Health Inc., wanted to create a comprehensive cancer center.  Heery Design was retained in late 2006 to design a state-of-the-art outpatient Oncology Center of Excellence to be located adjacent to the existing Medical College of Georgia Cancer Research Center.

The Center, initially planned to be 58,000 SF and vertically expandable to double its current size, will house medical oncology, supportive care, clinical research, clinical trials and translational research programs.  MCGHealth is one of the national leaders in family and patient centered care, and the building has been designed with input and leadership from a series of patient and staff advisory groups.  The center will provide multi-disciplinary, cutting edge treatment and translational research opportunities within a multi-state, multi county area.

Hallmarks of the design include numerous supportive care areas, roof and healing gardens and the inclusion of evidence-based design elements, creating an atmosphere which will enhance wellness during treatments.  The project will also contain a parking structure, providing ease of access to the Center.

MCGHealth, the organization which oversees the Medical Center, is a not for profit organization which supports the research and education mission of the Medical College of Georgia.  The MCG Medical Center includes a 478 bed adult hospital, an Ambulatory Care Center, a Specialized Care Center with a Level I regional trauma center and a 154-bed Children’s Medical Center.
