Medical Center of the Rockies
Loveland, Colorado
Located on a 91-acre campus, the new Medical Center of the Rockies (MCR) is a collaboration of two regional health systems — Poudre Valley Health System (PVHS) in Fort Collins, Colorado, and Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Nebraska — that brings world-class healthcare to Front Range residents of northern Colorado, southern Wyoming and southwestern Nebraska. The 595,000 SF, 136-bed medical center is designed as a hospital within a hospital and houses the Heart Center of the Rockies and the Trauma Center of the Rockies. Heery served as the architect, programmer and planner for the center, which achieved LEED Gold certification and is the largest hospital to have achieved LEED Gold certification. Heery and PVHS agreed on a fast-track design and construction process to bring the project in on time and without budget overruns. Since its opening in 2007, MCR has received rave reviews for its innovative features from patients, families and hospital staff.
In addition to the trauma and heart centers, MCR also has an obstetrics department and well-baby nursery; surgical inpatient services; general orthopedics; neurology; radiology department and laboratory; acute-dialysis unit and hyperbaric oxygen treatment center. An 85,000 SF medical office building, also designed by Heery, is attached to the south wing of the hospital, and a second identical building is under construction at the north wing. The campus is master planned to accommodate up to 400 total inpatient beds with supporting ancillary services. The site allows for future expansion horizontally rather than vertically.
