Hanley-Wood - Corporate Headquarters

Washington, D.C.

One challenge facing the publishing industry today is the transformation of traditional print workspace to reflect the new venture of e-publishing, and within this challenge is a secondary need to design space that will appeal to a young, Generation X work force.  Hanley-Wood, a residential building trade publishing firm, knew Heery International would meet that challenge.  The design team successfully preserved the unique nature of the ‘Hanley-Wood’ image by combining many of its original features with dynamic planning, the latest technology and brighter modern finishes.

This publications leader needed its Washington, D.C., headquarters to house a new e-build design division and to expand its human resources department. The firm’s senior staff requested that the new signature space co-exist within a contemporary environment, yet still reflect the firm’s corporate culture by preserving the strong teaming environment. Heery was challenged to keep the modern work environment open, yet flexible, allowing for privacy. This 11,000 SF program included 30 new workstations, 11 private offices, a new videoconference room, project teaming room and a pantry station.

Heery’s solution preserved and enhanced the unique aspects of the facility: barn door entrances, workstations in blonde woods and white metals, and scooped wall sconces.  New systems furniture was selected to provide for flexibility and quick reconfiguration of the floor space.   Workstations were aligned in an "S" configuration to avoid rigid lines of organization and encourage informal teaming.  Aluminum-framed glass storefronts allow visual contact between the open work areas and the private offices encouraging communication with senior staff.
