Georgia Dome

Atlanta, Georgia

The famed Georgia Dome has done its part in elevating the city of Atlanta to a new place in sports history. The Dome was the site of the first Super Bowl of the new millennium, Super Bowl XXXIV, as well as the host of the gymnastics and basketball events in the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. The Georgia Dome is also home to the National Football League’s Atlanta Falcons. Heery, in association with Rosser Fabrap International and Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback and Associates, provided architectural and engineering services for the domed stadium and exhibit facility. The Dome features a 71,500 capacity for football, as well as arena and stadium configurations for audiences of 20,000 to 80,000. The floor of the Dome seats up to 8,600 theatre-style, up to 6,000 in a classroom setting, up to 8,000 for banquets and up to 10,000 for receptions. An additional four meeting rooms can each accommodate from 50 to 150 people. The Dome also features 203 luxurious private suites on two levels.

When the Georgia Dome was hit by a tornado in Spring 2008, Heery staff members (even those recently retired) returned in a flash to advise on repairs to this important facility, especially its signature translucent roofing membrane of Teflon-coated fiberglass, which covers 850 feet of clear stadium action.

The July 26, 1999 issue of Engineering News Record lists The 125 Top Projects for the last 125 Years. The Georgia Dome is listed as the outstanding project of 1992.

Other annual events held at the Georgia Dome include the Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic, SEC Championship football game and the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The Dome has also hosted the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men’s and Women’s Basketball Final Four Tournaments.
