DeKalb County Courthouse - Additions and Renovations

Decatur, Georgia

In 1998, the DeKalb County Commission approved a courthouse program committed to long-term growth that included funding to renovate and expand the existing courthouse. Due to competing demands on funding in 2000, the DeKalb County Commission decided to split the project into initial immediate expansion and deferred renovation to a later date. The county called on Heery Design to help modernize and expand its facilities.

Phase 1 included the design, engineering and construction of a nine-story Judicial Tower Annex which houses 11 superior courts, seven state courts, two magistrate courts and a probate court. The Annex also provides expansion capacity for five additional prototype courtrooms in unfinished space. In addition to courtrooms, the Annex houses the superior court clerk, probate court administration, sheriff’s civil division, sheriff’s courthouse security command and detention holding area. The Annex is currently connected to the administrative tower on two levels, with bridge connections built-out on two more levels to be subsequently opened as renovation progresses.
