Cleveland State University - Julka Hall

Cleveland Ohio

Heery provided complete Program Management Services for construction of Julka Hall, a new building for the College of Education and Human Services.  The $26.5 million, three-story building provides multiple classrooms, seminar and meeting rooms, science/math/computer labs, instructional design studios, nursing simulation labs, counseling offices, reading and literacy tutoring clinic, and offices for over 100 faculty and staff.

Although the College of Education and Human Services has been a center of excellence for Cleveland State University, it never had its own building.  Julka Hall consolidates eight departments, including the School of Nursing, that had been scattered throughout the campus. The 100,412 SF building, which is seeking LEED Silver certification, was designed and constructed simultaneously with the new Student Center in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, another Heery-managed program for Cleveland State University.

A key feature is the state-of-the-art voice, data and video technology to model applications of technology in teaching, research and service.  The project also includes landscaping and site development of adjacent properties, including alterations to the Plaza, the entry to Health Sciences and the Mather Mansion garden.

The Heery construction management team coordinated several programs to attain the Silver LEED certification: using the Construction Pollution Plan to limit soil erosion; installing a “green roof” over a portion of the lower level; using renewable  bamboo veneer panels in the Atrium area; performing enhanced commissioning to verify energy performance; tracking recyclable material. Goals were met for a minimum 20% of building materials to be recycled material, and a minimum 75% of site waste recycled as well.

The bold design, tight urban site and unique building materials presented plenty of challenges but the project opened on time in May of 2010 and within the original budget.
