Atlanta Public Schools

Atlanta, Georgia

Heery is currently working on its fifth consecutive assignment from Atlanta Public Schools (APS), providing a variety of services from full program management services, to energy management consulting to construction management of swing space during an early construction program to project management staff augmentation services to assist the district in managing multiple renovations, additions and new construction projects.

Over the past decade, Heery has served APS through a period marked by change at the Board level, the Superintendent level and senior staff level, as well as in the type of funding being used to fund APS’s system-wide construction.

As one of Heery’s earliest assignments, the firm was commissioned to manage APS’s $258 million, five-year bond-funded renovation program, known as Phase I.  The assignment involved renovations to 72 elementary, middle and high schools.  In addition, Heery provided design-build and construction management at-risk to renovate seven surplus district properties to serve as temporary school homes for seven schools undergoing complete renovations.

Since that time, the district has moved to a new funding source called a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) for its capital improvements construction. Under this program, Heery provides project management staff augmentation services as a member of APS’s in-house staff, managing renovations, additions and new school building projects.  The projects include project management from planning through construction for four elementary schools and two middle schools, along with construction phase services only for numerous other projects, which include classroom additions, renovations and improvements.
