Aspen Valley Hospital

Aspen, Colorado

Heery has been providing architecture and master planning services for Aspen Valley Hospital in Aspen, Colo., since 1999. The overall Master Plan project consists of four major phases totaling $100 million. This involves the phased remodel and expansion of the existing 70,000 SF one-story community hospital into a three-story, 200,000 SF medical center of the future.

The master plan calls for both horizontal and vertical expansion of the existing hospital.  New service areas will be added in their entirety in order to move these services into new space before renovating vacated areas.  The new medical center model will transform Aspen Valley Hospital from an outdated, inpatient-focused building, to a progressive, outpatient-oriented, efficient, user-friendly medical center.

Major components of the plan include a 15,000 SF surgery department, 7,000 SF of outpatient clinics, 7,000 SF of physical therapy, The Aspen Birthplace, a new patient care unit, cardiac rehab/cardiopulmonary suites, an orthopedic sports medicine center of excellence and up to 30,000 SF of medical offices. Other design features include increased parking capacity, improved circulation paths, a rooftop heliport, physical plant improvements and expansions and 7,000 SF of shell space for future growth.

In addition to the design, Heery is providing commissioning services in conjunction with LEED consulting services.  One of the major project goals is to achieve a LEED Silver certification, or better.  In addition to LEED certification, the project is seeking compliance with the City of Aspen’s “Canary Initiative”, which stresses that all new buildings in Aspen produce a zero carbon footprint.
