Albany Public Schools - Improvement Program
Albany, New York
With many of its facilities dating back to the early 1900s, the City School District of Albany decided to undertake a wide-ranging effort to bring its schools up to modern building and education standards. Heery, in joint venture, was retained as construction manager for the Rebuild Albany Schools program with the understanding that we would assist with the pre-referendum planning. The Heery JV conducted extensive cost estimating and budgeting analyses to develop thorough and accurate costs for the long-term program, and also assisted with the development of general public information about the facilities plan.
With the successful passage of the referendum, the Heery JV managed the design, bidding and construction of all funded projects for the first phase of the project. The original $174.6 million program included one new middle school and four new elementary schools; massive renovations to two existing middle schools and four elementary schools; and minor renovations to three elementary schools. In 2007, the district added a second $32 million phase to the program involving three school facilities, for which the Heery JV again is providing construction program management services.
Despite challenges, the Heery JV has consistently coordinated the work of three different architects over the years to finish all projects on time and within budget, even in a fluctuating economy. The program overall is under budget, with cost estimates that have varied by less than one percent, and is scheduled for completion in 2011.
